Goss's Wilt Confirmed in Morrison County
Bacterial wilt and leaf blight of corn. Two main distinguishing characteristics can be used to differentiate GW from other types of leaf blight. One characteristic is dark green to black water-soaked spots near the edge of expanding lesions. The other characteristic is the exudate (ooze) that dries on the leaf surface and becomes shiny. Control of GW relies primarily on preventive measures such as planting resistant hybrids, rotating out of corn into non-host crops, controlling grassy weeds that can host the disease, and thoroughly incorporating corn residue as to facilitate decomposition.
Extreme cases may result in up to 50% yield loss.
